's look at these numbers. president obama still comfortably ahead. in fact, he's picked up a point. he's at 51%. mitt romney is at 43%. both campaigns think this one is getting more difficult by the moment for mitt romney to win. however -- and this is where it gets fascinating -- in virginia, the president's lead has shrunk to just two points, within the margin of error. last month president obama led by five points there. in florida, mitt romney has closed the gap as well. he's now statistically tied in the state of florida. it is a one-point lead. 47%-46%. al hunt, it is fascinating. ohio seems to be on its own as far as the swing states go. but we could show other swing state polls in colorado, in nevada, in north carolina. these states are really getting tight, to such a degree that a great performance by romney tonight could change the dynamic. >> conceivably, but i don't think it's quite that close yet. i think you certainly see it, as you point out, in florida and virginia. you don't see it in ohio. wisconsin it looks like it's actually widening. iowa, it's four to six. and the

be january 2009, when president obama took office. the labor department says of these numbers, employers added only 114,000 jobs over the course of that month. so that raises a let of questions about this headline number. many jobs added are part-time jobs. bill: stuart varney, anchor of "varney & company" in the fox business network. you read what? >> there is widespread mistrust of this report and these numbers. there are clear contradictions. 873,000 people said they had found work but only 114 thou knew jobs were created that is contradiction. if you delve a little deeper, seems a lot of these people who found work, that would be, that is the 873,000, if you look deeply, it turns out 600,000 of those 873,000 people were part-time workers. so they came back into the labor force and they pushed unemployment rate down to 7.8% but there is a contradiction here, between the number of new jobs created and number of people saying they found work. it was part-time work, bill. that's what it was. bill: how do you drop a third in the overall number and only add about 100,000 jobs? >> well the

until the first presidential debate, president obama and mitt romney will have the chance to press one another to answer questions that they themselves have been reluctant to answer. we'll run through some big ones, keeping them honest tonight. first, we've got some late polling. new cnn/orc numbers that show the race tightening. president obama still leads among likely voters 50% to 47% but that three-point gap is within the poll's margin of error. by comparison, just after the conventions, mr. obama got a four-point bounce to put him in the lead by six. the president's favorable rating meantime remains above the crucial 50% mark at 52%. mr. romney is close but still in negative territory at 49%. he enjoys an edge on handling the deficit and joblessness, but trails on virtually every other big issue, including medicare, taxes and foreign policy. keeping them honest, when it comes to some of those issues, both candidates have come up short either on specifics or credibility. issues like cutting taxes without ballooning the deficit or burdening the middle class. the romney campaign has

friends, the low point, needing help, i backed the president obama when he took out osama bin laden. president bush, it took both presidents doing what they thought was right, to get the job done. why is it considered a weakness to ask one party to ask another party to help them out. maybe we can sit down and talk through some of his and talk through some of it. i might be wrong and i might be out of touch. we are out of touch just because people say you have to be left or right. i am a team player and i am all for teamwork. there are things i agree with on the right and their there are other things i agree with on the left. but i will tell you one thing, i don't think anything should be rammed down our throats and i think it ought to be bipartisan. we have to get back to that point. now, with seal team six, there was one reason we would not win. one primary reason. it was a way of a communication problem. it could be on the wrong radio, a bad location, there is always a reason why. but there was a communication problem. not having an interpreter there -- we have to start communicat
